What's the "twURLed World"? Where am I?
"twURLed World" webs are hypertexts of selected URLs collected on
a particular topic. The collection and selection tool, twURL, helps a topic
author to rapidly browse search engine results, decide which URLs to include
on a topic, attach keywords to web pages, and then extend the web with
links among URLs. The resulting hypertext (document) is presented on this
website as static HTML pages you're free to browse or for search engines
to crawl. The overall structure of a web topic hypertext looks like:

Topic
A write-up about the purpose and background of each collection is presented
as a cover page, which can be linked to by any other page. Kind of a home

Definitions
URL: the usual web notation, http://www.site.domain/...
URL Details: Snippets of information that characterize a web
page
-
Page text: Annotation received from search engine or extracted by twURL
-
Valuations and Decisions, indicating a numerical ranking and web topic
author evaluation
-
HTML fields: title, META,headings
-
Source: search engine results or HTML page including this URL
-
Links: computed (among URLs in the collection, not the whole web)
Domain: all the sites representing URLs in the collection
Site: all the URLs at the same XX.YY, which may be very broad
(e.g. YY=.mil) or diverse (e.g. aol.com or ISP.net) or narrow (e.g. an
individual site)
Vocabulary:
A list of keywords that express a perspective on a web topic.
Some are broad (e.g. "role" or "discipline") or topic-specific jargon and
concepts (e.g. "information warfare" or "mad cow disease")
Keyword:
A word that commonly matches certain pages to form a cluster
of related URLs. Match means the keyword appears somewhere in the URL details
(snippets) about the page, not the whole page as do search engines, meaning
the keyword usually represents a "higher level" concept. Words ending in
. match anything as a suffix.
Top/Metric: Some way of counting key properties of pages and sites:
-
links TO or FROM other URLs/sites in the collection
-
Valuations: numerical formulas that indicate a ranking, using number of
links and number of keywords. Valuations appear bracketed near URLs {} and
in URL Details fields.
Link/Virtual Link:
The usual information included in HTML HREF. Virtual links
are added to the nearest URL at the same site. Virtual links compensate
for the different ways page authors link, e.g. main page, expecting the
user to drill down, or low in the directory structure to an exact page
(which is likely to change)
Decision:
As the web topic author uses twURL, decisions are added to
help filter and determine the scope of the collection. Decision categories
help identify the very best to less useful URLs.
Topic web: In two senses
-
Conceptually, a collection of inter-linked and keyword-annotated URLs on
a subject, e.g. a book, political issue, or person
-
As hypertext, the suite of HTML pages, organized into domains, keywords,
tops, and details
